3x - 8 < -5 or 2x - 7 > 5
Start with 3x - 8 < -5
add 8 to both sides
3x - 8 + 8 < - 5 + 8
3x < 3
divide both sides by 3
x < 1

2x - 7 > 5
add 7 to both sides
2x - 7 + 7 > 5 + 7
2x > 12
divide both sides by 2
x > 6

Solution: x < 1 or x > 6
(- infinity, 1) U (6, infinity) in interval notation
